How to renew a licence disc in Johannesburg
Your disc expires on the last day of the month printed on it. You get a 21-day grace period. After that, late penalties start.
Fastest options in 2026:
- NaTIS online — online.natis.gov.za. Pay online and have the disc couriered to your address.
- Bank apps — FNB, Capitec, Absa, Standard Bank and Nedbank all offer licence disc renewal.
- Retail counters — Shoprite, Checkers and USave Money Market.
- City registering authorities / selected Post Offices — same-day disc if you go in person.
- Johannesburg licence disc services — local agents collect documents, pay the fee and deliver the disc.
Company vehicles, unpaid fines, or blocked records usually need an in-person or agent renewal.
Documents you need
- Owner’s ID
- Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement, not older than 3 months)
- Current disc details or renewal notice (ALV form if you didn’t get a notice)
- Roadworthy certificate only if the vehicle is public transport or a heavy-load vehicle
If the utility bill is not in your name, add an affidavit from the account holder plus their ID.
What it costs
The annual licence fee depends on your vehicle’s tare weight and Gauteng tariffs. On top of that, you may pay:
- RTMC / admin fee (often around R72)
- Bank, supermarket or agent service fee
- Courier fee if the disc is delivered
Renew more than 21 days late, and you pay 10% of the licence fee per month overdue, capped at 100%, plus arrears.
Outstanding JMPD or AARTO fines can block the renewal until they are cleared.
